The English Language is one of the glories of Western civilisation and is fast becoming the sole medium for international communication in many parts of the world. Where did it come from? How did it acquire its breadth and richness? Does the way we use it - and occasionally abuse it - tell us anything about the people we are? And should we be concerned about the speed at which it is changing? This talk is a none-too-serious attempt to answer some of these questions.
