GRANADA REGION DIGITAL SWITCHOVER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009KENDAL TRANSMITTER UPDATE – TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2009 As you know, the Winter Hill transmitter group (Granada region) switches to digital on 4 November and 2 December. This affects viewers in South Cumbria who receive their television signals from Winter Hill or one of its relays in North Lancashire or Furness. In the early hours of Wednesday 4 November, the Winter Hill transmitter and all its relay transmitters will be shut down to allow the switchover process to start. BBC2 analogue will be switched off and one group of BBC digital channels will start up in its place. Winter Hill is expected to restart by around 06.00 but many of the relays will not restart until later in the day. In the early hours of Wednesday 2 December, the Winter Hill transmitter and all its relay transmitters will again be shut down to allow the completion of the switchover transition. The remaining analogue services will be switched off and the rest of the digital services will be started up in their place. Winter Hill is again expected to restart by around 06.00 but many of the relays will not restart until later in the day. Viewers who receive their television signals from one of the relays (in Cumbria: Millom Park; Barrow Town Hall; Roose; Dalton in Furness; Urswick; Penny Bridge; Backbarrow; Cartmel and Staveley in Cartmel) will receive around 15 Freeview channels for the first time. Viewers whose signals come directly from Winter Hill or Lancaster will be able to see additional commercial channels. IMPORTANT INFORMATIONKENDAL TRANSMITTER ENGINEERING WORK – TUESDAY 10 NOVEMBER 2009 On Tuesday 10 November, engineering work will take place at the Kendal transmitter group in South Lakeland, following the completion of stage 1 of the Granada switchover. Services will be off air for a number of hours in the early morning, and all viewers who receive their TV from the Kendal transmitter will need to retune their Freeview equipment in the morning. The Kendal transmitter and its relay transmitters at Coniston, Crosthwaite, Grasmere, Hawkshead, Kendal Fell, Millthrop, Sedbergh and Windermere will be off the air while the work is being carried out. The Kendal transmitter is expected to restart around 0600. The other transmitters are expected to restart around mid morning – except for Coniston, which should restart around lunchtime. BBC services at the Kendal transmitter have been located on a temporary frequency since the Border Digital Switchover, in order to prevent interference with other services in the Granada region. Following the Granada digital switchover, services at Kendal are now being moved to their final frequency.
