Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society – Fishing in Morecambe Bay

A large audience was enthralled by the first lecture of the 2013 season - Jack Manning's talk on the history of fishing in Morecambe Bay.

The Manning familys involvement in fishing Morecambe Bay spanned several generations.  Jack recounted many stories - sad, happy and amazing.  In the early days mussel fishing was common until the tragic death of three Flookburgh fishermen in November 1912.  Shrimp fishing was the mainstay – most were sold locally because of problems with keeping them fresh.  But this changed when Youngs built a freezer plant in the village in the 1950s.  Fishermen went out twice a day, with horse and cart, to supply the factory. The whole family was involved - the women "picked" the boiled shrimps before they went to Youngs.  In 1954 tractors came in which allowed the men to harvest cockles. When the cockle beds dried up whitebait fishing took over but didnt last long.  Jack illustrated his talk with pictures of fishing on the Bay which included a variety of netting techniques and implements used.

In 1964 Jack was the last fisherman with a horse and cart – he showed us himself on a BBC archive film of shrimping with horse and carts.
